What is a Charitable Social Enterprise?

What is a Charitable Social Enterprise?

When I started working for GLL and Better Venues I had no idea what a charitable social enterprise was, let alone what it meant to be working for one. Since then, I have discovered how important it is to have these types of companies and the benefits that it creates for our communities.

Who are we?

GLL (Better Venues), is the UK’s largest charitable social enterprise leisure provider, and is also a registered charity with social objectives. As a charitable social enterprise, any financial surplus made is reinvested back into the community and facilities we operate, and not for the benefit of investors.
As a company, we donate time, effort, and money to improve the wellbeing of the communities we work with.

What does it mean?

There are no shareholders. The company is owned and run by its staff and Society members (who receive no financial dividend). Any financial surplus is reinvested back into our services, staff and the community.
As a charity, the company is run specifically for the community it’s operating in, with social values being just as important as financial values.

What it means for our customers?

We provide services that are constantly being updated and invested in. Our staff are continually ‘up-skilled’ to provide a continuity of high quality service. Prices for services are always affordable, to allow as many people as possible access our facilities.

What it means for the community?

We operate a wider ranger of facilities that are continually maintained and accessible, allowing social interaction and inclusion for all, whether this be through our leisure services, such as affordable day spas, sports development, parks and adventure play; or through our libraries and venues. Wherever we are, and whatever service or space we operate, we never forget our core values and social purpose.

What it means for staff?

Our staff is very important to us in a charitable social enterprise. It is them who make the business work, so investing time and training into teams provides a better service for the community. Companies’ board members are elected by staff, ensuring that staff views are heard and can influence the direction we want the company to go.
